A huge thanks to everyone who came to our Big Garden Birdwatch at Walmer Castle. Together, we counted 38 birds, including 5 woodpigeons, 4 magpies and, unusually, 2 kestrels. Keep an eye out for any birds we missed and join us next year to do it all again!

This painting, attributed to Sir Martin Beckman, shows the three castles built to protect the Downs – Sandown, Deal, and Walmer. It portrays the tradition where warships would fire a salute before given safe harbour and the castles fire a salute in return.
