The Environmental Foundation (EFL) and the South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN) have signed a MOU in 2025 to strengthen regional cooperation in combating wildlife crime, marking a key milestone in EFL’s long-term pursuit of Justice for Nature #justicefornature #SAWEN

In Sri Lanka, 44% of elephant range lies outside Protected Areas, mostly in Other State Forests (OSFs) that connect habitats. Clearing OSFs fuels Human-Elephant Conflict. In 2021, EFL won a legal battle restoring OSF protections, safeguarding these vital elephant habitats.

In Colombo, SAWEN & SLaWEN joined forces to combat transnational wildlife crime, aligning 8 nations & 15 Sri Lankan agencies on prosecution-led, intelligence & finance-focused action. Under EFL’s ACE Program (funded by INL), collaboration is driving real enforcement results.

EFL will continue to work with national authorities and regional partners to strengthen legal protections, build investigative and prosecutorial capacity, and ensure Sri Lanka’s biodiversity remains wild and free.

In 2020, we filed a case in the Court of Appeal which is now before the SC. Recognizing the urgent need to end this destructive practice, we have now filed an Intervention Petition in a separate SC case to strengthen the fight against bottom trawling in the estuary.
