Moving on to EXOPRODIGI's work on monitoring vessel performance data with the help of digital tools and solutions. The possibility to capture and analyse operational data makes it easier to identify potential inefficiencies, reduce fuel consumption and emissions! 💪🚢

Easy access to engine data is a way for shipowners to prevent breakdowns, decrease fuel consumption and emissions, and reduce maintenance and repair costs. As we have discovered in our project, data logged from alarm/control systems with the help of digital tools can enable this.

We have also worked on developing solutions such as #digital data capture for cargo units, an application for smarter cargo stowage system and 3D scanning of vessels & #cargo units. These enable optimal planning & execution of stowage and improved utilisation of resources🏗️🚢

What are the challenges shipping is currently facing in terms of sustainability objectives? One issue is the fact that fleet renewal is a slow process which is why focus needs to also be on improving operational aspects of existing fleets, reminds Elisa Mikkolainen @BSAG_.

Shipping is not a local activity and the world is not build upon silos, notes Johanna Yliskylä-Peuralahti. How to decarbonise global shipping from the perspective of intercontinental voyages is an important question and also a major governance issue.

So what tools and drivers are needed to change maritime industry practices for the better? According to our expert panellists it's a combination of regulations, new technologies, access to capital, pressure from both investors and consumers, as well as a right kind of attitude.
