Paul confessed that the journey to heaven had many tribulations. Today we’ve settled for a “stop suffering, gospel made simple” fantasy. Do you understand the place of suffering in God’s salvation plan? Strengthen me Lord!

“She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.” This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated. Acts 16:17-18

Morning Sojourner, a demon possessed girl freely advertised Paul’s mission. Paul did not like the source of recommendation; he did not need demonic approval of his work. Paul knew the God he served and did not need a demonic letter of reference.

He silenced the demons of divination although they spoke well of him. Many of us are sadly okay with any powers that give us recognition. Isn’t it enough that God has sent you and that His Spirit is your witness? God help me!

“Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace. A mob quickly formed against them, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods…” Acts 16:19-20 NLT

Morning Sojourner, this girl’s master exploited her demonic possession for money. Her healing was a blow to his business. People who earn money and fame thro demonic work in people’s lives are greedy and Godless.

They keep their clients bound thro isolation from believers and by slandering God’s faithful servants. Can you withstand the pressure that comes from telling the truth to a world that can’t handle it? Help me Lord!

“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” Acts 16:25 NLT

Morning Sojourner, though Paul and Silas were publicly shamed, beaten, and imprisoned for doing good, they were filled with holy joy. They sang praises to God at a difficult hour of the night. Nothing would make them stop praising God.

We can all be happy during good times, but real joy comes only from within. It is a gift available to believers at all times. The prisoners were listening to them, just like the world is always watching us.

“The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!” Acts 16:27-28 NLT

Morning Sojourner, it would have been natural for Paul and Silas to assume that God provided a miraculous jailbreak for them. But to them, the lives of others were more important than their own freedom and comfort. Their minds might have said “escape”, while discernment said,

“stay for the sake of this one soul”. They were guided by the Holy Spirit, not merely by circumstances. Do you know that not every door that flings open belongs to you? Help me to discern your will Lord!

“… “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household.” Acts 16:30-32 NLT

Morning Sojourner, the jailer was impressed by the love Paul and Silas showed him. He admired their ability to be joyful in misery and desired what they had. God wants our lives to be natural magnets drawing people to Him. Our faith should make others want what we have with God.

Paul did not complicate salvation for the officer. He preached grace not fire and brimstone. Are you representing God by attraction or by intimidation? God help me!

“He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.” Acts 16:34 NLT

Morning Sojourner, the jailer who had punished Paul and Silas was now cleaning their wounds. He also fed them, showing repentance and a desire to follow their example of love. The gain of their not escaping thro the door that miraculously opened for them was great.

They saved the jailer from committing suicide, led him and his family to Christ and even baptized them. We draw people to Christ by our love more than our threats. Do you know that God can use you greatly even during dark moments? I won’t stop singing!
