Happy #FossilFriday! What’s this about? It’s how we recently got weights on a couple fossils at Science Museum of Minnesota. For each we rigged the whole cart to a scale using a forklift. The big dinosaur vertebra was under 30lbs and the slab of 450 million year old fossils was under 100lbs
On our way from the Science Museum of Minnesota today for our big dig, we stopped at the Barnes County Historical Society in Valley City, #NorthDakota. Fun place with a nice cast Triceratops skeleton and an original partial skeleton beneath it! Plus a locally found mosasaur!
#Montana Dino Dig Day 1 went well! We took the wall back and exposed a bunch of new layer right next to the #dinosaur we exposed and jacketed last year. Stay tuned for more! Under permit via Bureau of Land Management to Science Museum of Minnesota
Dino Dig 2024: Day 2! Today we were joined by professors at Macalester College (plus 2 students on the team) to work up a stratigraphic section to put our #dinosaur site in some important geologic context! All part of paleo work at the Science Museum of Minnesota!
Happy #FossilFriday! It’s Day 3 of our #Dinosaur Dig in #Montana! Today we uncovered a duck-billed dinosaur vertebra and ceratopsian vertebra (think Triceratops) right next to each other. Should be jacketing tomorrow! All part of work we do at the Science Museum of Minnesota
Dino Dig: Day 4! Jacketing this big ol’ block to haul back as part of our research work at the Science Museum of Minnesota! We currently think this jacket has a #dinosaur pelvis and leg bone, but they were too unstable so we’ll need to prep them out to know. Exciting stuff!
Dino Dig: Day 5! Today we checked out a spot where Macalester College has been studying and found #dinosaur teeth, #crocodile bits, fish, #turtle and more! All a little over 70 million years old. Part of the work we do at the Science Museum of Minnesota!
Dino Dig 2024: Last Day! It took until sunset but we got it out! Big jacket of yet to be determined #dinosaur bones from #Montana from 66 million years ago. What a wonderful time again this summer in the Big Sky State. Now to start working on it at the Science Museum of Minnesota !
Happy #FossilFriday! Enjoy a couple find the #fossil #shark tooth images from today’s collecting (under permit) in northern #Minnesota! These are about 95 million years old, from the time of the #dinosaurs! Part of a project w/ MN Discovery Center, reppin’ Science Museum of Minnesota.
Happy #FossilFriday! Recently back out #fossil collecting in south-central #Minnesota, thru Science Museum of Minnesota (under DNR permit). 1st pic looks like #Bison tooth 🦬, looking old enough to collect, but the #beaver femur (2nd pic) looked pretty recent. Beautiful day on the river!
Alex Hastings previews this weekend's Dino Fest fun! 🦕 From our prehistoric favs to the dino descendants still living amongst us, join us this Saturday for a roarin’ time! bit.ly/4d86R3G
We had a great Dino Fest at the Science Museum of Minnesota yesterday! So many special guests, presentations & we opened a big field jacket (w/ #dinosaur bone inside). HUGE thanks to our many guests, volunteers and staff that helped make it happen!
Happy #FossilFriday! Was recently in northern #Minnesota (reppin’ Science Museum of Minnesota) to help jacket a block of rock with #fossil tree roots from 95 million years ago. Also found plenty of shark teeth 🦈 and other fun #fossils. Glad to be a part of the project thru MN Discovery Center!
Happy #FossilFriday! Come see the #fossil display at the Minnesota State Fair (DNR building) by the MN Discovery Center. We’re reppin’ for Science Museum of Minnesota and boy are there some fun things to check out! Also come for Ask A Scientist on the The Minnesota Star Tribune stage on Sat. Aug. 31, 12 & 3pm!
Happy #FossilFriday! Wonder how we know color in #dinosaurs like Archaeopteryx & Confuciusornis? Come to #Minnesota State Fair Aug 31 & see a demo by us from Science Museum of Minnesota on The Minnesota Star Tribune stage (by Grandstand ramp) at 12 & 2pm and also see Ask a Paleontologist at 11am & 3pm!
Happy #FossilFriday! We often have to ID #fossil #bones at Science Museum of Minnesota. This ulna came from a #cave in southeastern #Minnesota that gets ‘wash in’ from the surface. Here it is next to a Gray Squirrel, 13 Lined Ground Squirrel & (the winner) a Pocket Gopher!
Happy #FossilFriday! This whopper of a #fish is Phareodus, 50 million yrs old from #Wyoming. It was a speedy & toothy predator of a vast ancient lake. You can see it for yourself & plenty more at our Collector’s Event tomorrow (Sept 21) at Science Museum of Minnesota, 11am to 3pm!
