The Ocean Systems Department at @NIOZnieuws is looking for a chemical analyst. State-of-the-art equipment, a diverse group of colleagues, opportunities to sail the high seas, working on the beautiful island of Texel... so many perks! workingat.nioz.nl/o/chemical-ana… NIOZ Jobs

Yes, I love the seafloor of the open ocean. But all sediments are fascinating, truly. Today, we had a glorious day sampling water and sediment in the Port of Rotterdam. Collecting sediments at 10 m water depth is quick! Apologies to the worms...

Wires and tubes. Looks messy, but giving us very useful info on fluxes between sediment and water for gases and solutes. Thanks NIOZ workshop! Meanwhile, that worm is owning the sediment-water interface. Show-off.

In the marine part of the Port of Rotterdam:no worms but now bivalves rearranging the sediment like they own the place. The nerve!

Sea-going research. Most people will just see the plots and words in the resulting articles. But it starts with endless packing lists and a hallway filled with stuff. You forget, you're screwed. In August, we'll sail to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge for our #I_NANO cruise! Hooray!

Our dream to explore the role of the North Sea in large-scale fluxes of carbon and other nutrients has come true, under the leadership of Furu of Ocean Systems @NIOZnieuws! Ship time, PhDs, Postdocs, it's going to be a fabulous 5 years!

Farewell Azores, hydrothermal vents here we come! #I_NANO cruise, a Nioz At Sea and Geosciences UU collaboration, is underway, everyone prepping for the first station on the mid-Atlantic Ridge. Martina Preiner @nanoOlli

In an impressive feat, the crew of RV Pelagia just managed to hang our video-equipped CTD directly above a diffuse venting spot the size of snooker table, at 800m depth, with currents... Amazing. Can't wait to analyze the samples. #I_NANO #whoneedsarov

I propose a new indicator for calm seas: can you charge your toothbrush without using tape? The #I_NANO cruise with RV Pelagia to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge around 37N is blessed in this respect so far. Nioz At Sea

#I_NANO is in full swing, waters full of plume material arriving on deck. The different teams are operating like clockwork. Some potentially ground-breaking experiments underway. And calm weather. Two days to go, so far so awesome. Martina Preiner @nanoOlli Nioz At Sea Geosciences UU

Today, the #I_NANO cruise menu features my favorite dish: sediment! Hooray! Box corer with camera down above venting area, hoping to sample some sediment from this volcanic seafloor. Martina Preiner @nanoOlli Nioz At Sea Geosciences UU

While the last used sampling equipment of #I_NANO is being stored away, the Pelagia is taking up speed to rush back to shore so it can continue its long journey without us. Farewell, Rainbow! @NIOZnieuws Geosciences UU Peter Kraal @nanoOlli Wen-Hsuan Liao @Cutmore4 Isabel van der Hoeven Su Ding

Coring the sediment around hydrothermal vents during #I_NANO was challenging, but never boring. Rocks, metal crusts, we found it all. Here, what looks like a iron-manganese crust overlying some seriously metal-rich sediment. @nanoOlli Martina Preiner Nioz At Sea Geosciences UU

Very excited to announce that we are now looking for a PhD candidate to explore a poorly known but potentially crucial component of the marine phosphorus cycle: workingat.nioz.nl/o/phd-position… Attracted to ocean-going research and innovative lab work? This is the PhD for you!
