Returning to play after a subluxation involves resolution of pain, return of full motion & strength, and no feelings of apprehension with football activities. It's hard to simulate contact in a practice setting so that is the one unknown variable until stepping on the field.

The most important part is that Ricky Pearsall is alive and avoided major organ injury. Every gunshot wound carries a different degree of injury to the surrounding tissues, but barring any major structural injury these typically take (in general) 4-6 weeks to heal.

Seeing this video of Ricky Pearsall once again demonstrates just how remarkable it was that his gun shot wound did not impact any vital organs. The lack of a sling on that side as well is a positive sign re: soft tissue damage. #49ers
