Looking forward to presenting at SARSCENE 2025 in Ottawa on police and SAR volunteers in Canada working better together. An interesting range of topics in the field of search and rescue will be discussed, from women in SAR to updates on lost person behaviour to AI for missing

A useful guide for researchers on how to approach research collaborations with agencies such as police. Almost all the top researchers in our field are notably good at applying the tips listed here, especially the need to build long-term relationships. doi.org/10.1080/247519…

🚨 Police #visibility = impt metric for many #policing activities. It’s often assumed that physical presence of 🚔 = ppl see the 🚔. But do ppl always see the 🚔 when they're present? In my new JOEX article, I find the answer is *no*: doi.org/10.1007/s11292…. A 🧵: 1/5

New Canadian study released today: Out of 24M+ police occurrences (2014–2023), only 424 involved serious bodily harm linked to misconduct — fewer than 2 incidents per 100,000. Context matters when talking about policing. facetsjournal.com/doi/10.1139/fa… #cdnpoli #PublicSafety #Research

A masterclass by Ian T. Adams in how to test a theory, using the example of 'ghost criminology' (a reasonable idea hiding behind a silly name and a huge amount of waffle). The end result being the theory isn't supported by experimental evidence. doi.org/10.21428/cb6ab…

NEW RESEARCH ‼️ What are the negative effects of true crime on co-victims (the loved ones of missing people, victims, and/or perpetrators)? Together with Dr. Kelli Boling, we explored this question through in-depth interviews with 20 co-victims. 🧵

New in Justice Quarterly: two great qualitative researchers (Logan Somers, Natalie Todak) team up with two over-indulged quants (Scott and me). Same text corpus; different tools. How does a machine learning approach (STM) stack up against traditional qualitative analysis?

Just this week, saw multiple examples of grad students use LLMs to generate reference lists by uploading PDFs and saying “give me an APA 7 ref list.” Great example of how the *belief* that AI will bring us efficiency runs into the *reality* of an inefficient process. Grad
