What's it like experiencing #cyberflashing on a daily basis? Listen to Elle Edwards explaining it's #abusive #harassment #threatening & my comments on how Law Commission's proposed new law welcome but not go far enough Larissa Kennelly BBC News (UK) bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-579…

Of the 88 girls (aged 12-18) who took part in focus groups for this study, around 3/4 said they had received images of male genitals - around half of which appeared to be from adult men. Q: Do we need more education for adult men on sexting & the law??? theguardian.com/media/2021/dec…

📣Trying to overlook existential Cov-Christmas dread & be pleased today as the gov has agreed that cyber flashing should be illegal - on the simple basis that what is illegal offline should be online too. Have been writing about this since 2017 (!!!) & spoken to 100+ victims

Thread on why it’s important we properly name the type of content we’re referring to when talking about cyberflashing 👇

A quick thread on end-to-end encryption and where NSPCC thinks we should go next. TL: DR: never ending debates based on a binary trade-off between privacy and safety get us nowhere, let’s think about risk profiles, and recognise children have a voice in this debate

Great write-up of the concerns raised by Joint Committee on the Draft Online Safety Bill and now @CommonsDCMS about the gaps to be plugged in the #OnlineSafetyBill. It’s time for Department for Culture, Media and Sport to listen and engage constructively on these important recommendations bit.ly/3qSas0e via ComputerWeekly

Important recognition of harms of #cyberflashing #WelcomeStart But only *some* cyberflashing cases covered where can prove specific motives of offenders. This means (a) gaps in the law and (b) difficult to prosecute. Hopefully, amendments still possible #OnlineSafetyBill

Big day, today. But before the #OnlineSafetyBill is published, worth paying tribute to the hard graft of committed NSPCC staff & campaigners who secured the initial commitment to legislate. And some brilliant civil society voices who’ve got us here Carnegie UK Molly Rose Foundation

How can it be that after a year of government rhetoric on violence against women and multiple committees acknowledging the deeply gendered nature of online abuse, today's #OnlineSafetyBill does not mention women and girls even once? endviolenceagainstwomen.org.uk/women-girls-fa…

You can read a snapshot of our research about young peoples experiences of IBSHA and how schools can better support students. Lots of quotes that illustrate the pain and trauma of image based abuse as well as it’s normalisation, and the need to urgently challenge sexual violence.
