A good reminder that historical controls don’t work when evaluating interventions for stroke risk.

If you are testing a drug/procedure and are using historical controls then it’s likely the modern intervention will win solely because stroke risk has decreased over time.

1/ #STROKE : Atrial arrhythmias detected by cardiac monitoring after stroke are associated with a lower risk of subsequent stroke than clinically-overt atrial fibrillation, and it is not known whether anticoagulation confers a net benefit in this population.
