A Roman iron shackle with marks indicating an attempt to break it. The shackle was found along with other metal objects near a furnace, where it was probably intended to be melted down as scrap metal. From Heidenheim an der Brenz, 2nd/3rd century AD. #RomanArchaeology

It’s an often overlooked fact when thinking about #HadriansWall is where did the soldiers live when building or repairing the wall? At Burnhead a temporary camp survives possibly used by the wall builders although dating is difficult with these sites #Archaeology #RomanBritain

A #Roman terracotta vessel, used to hold wine, & decorated with hunting scenes in raised relief. Above is a short piece of text asking the drinker to help themselves & then pass it on. Good advice from 1700-1800 years ago! #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology

A #Roman water bottle/canteen, found at Newstead (Scotland), the Roman fort of Trimontium. Aside from the corrosion, it looks exactly like something that could be used in the modern day - illustrating the timeless principle 'if it isn't broke...' #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology

A #Roman glass flask complete with stopper, found at #Corbridge (England). It has survived in absolutely amazing condition - and demonstrates that there was room for a little luxury even on the far-flung frontiers of the empire! #Archaeology #RomanFortThursday

Pretty happy with this for a bit of feedback! Although the subject matter helps a lot - Varus & the Teutoburg are an excellent subject - as does having an excellent host in Ancient History Hound Podcast.

A piece of #Roman graffiti scratched into plaster at #Pompeii, showing a gladiator in combat, swinging his shield high with his left arm. I love ordinary art like this from the ancient world, it feels like such a direct connection with the past #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology

A few of the last loaves of #Roman bread ever baked in #Pompeii - the city was lost to the eruption of Vesuvius before anyone got a chance to eat them #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: a #Roman jug and a handled bowl. Sets like this were vessels for hand-washing. They were used during sacrifices and banquets. Usually they were made of metall. Found in Cologne, dating 2nd c. AD Photo: Römisch-Germanisches Museum Köln
