After a difficult school drop off, things we are listening to: a loud crow & magpie, white wagtails, house sparrows, a cheeky robin, great tits, chaffinches, dunnocks and wrens, a buzzard overhead, ponies chomping over the hedge. Trying not feel mum guilt about feeling grateful

This event that I am speaking at is sold out currently but please get in touch if you want to discuss - I know some people have tried to sign up and can’t!

Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s work on ‘unchilding’ has been some of the most profound on my thinking. That more sociologists of childhood/youth aren’t speaking up - about any of what’s happening in Palestine - is a deep indictment of the state of academia.

Wow a lot of people are mad at this bang on critique bc the OP ‘didn’t mention gender’. That’s the whole point. The lack of critical thinking or basic understanding about the division of labour is absolutely mind blowing.

We also found evidence of this in relation to care and youth justice experienced children. Really important to note the backgrounds of many of these children involve control & abuse making the experience deprivation of liberty extremely harrowing justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmiprobation/r…

We promised change, it’s beginning and education is right at the heart of it. Breakfast clubs will boost attendance and attainment. They’ll mean better work choices for parents and better life chances for children. We’re ushering in a new era of child centred government.

This is fascinating from a policy analysis perspective, I’m not at all convinced it will do these things and delivery will be nightmare, but I’m itching to see how it turns out in a few years

The thing about ’child poverty’ is that it is poverty. A child lives in poverty because the significant adults in their lives live in poverty. Stop addressing child poverty as a distinct form of poverty. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Hundreds of people came to this and I’m chuffed to see the strength of feeling about doing better for care and YJ experienced children & young people. It was recorded, so happy to share this as I know there were many on the waiting list. Just email [email protected]

Stark new figures show a rise in the numbers of young care leavers facing homelessness - we are failing more and more young people and urgently need to act. The prime minister’s recent announcement on local connection was a step in the right direction but broader action needed

Heartbreaking. The family had visits from social workers, health visitors. Mother a lone parent had mental health problems, poor housing. Far too much expected of her. No family support. Her 4 boys died in house fire. So tragic. The state must do more. theguardian.com/society/2024/o…

More investment in preschool provision needed, for sure. But this is really disappointingly really un child focused.l, ‘bend the children to fit the system’ analysis of the issue. Also no critical thought about what ‘evidence’ is, & who decides the measures

Vast majority of children’s homes are run for profit, & disproportionately located in areas with lower property prices. Children would have been dislocated from their communities when taken to these homes, then uprooted again when homes forced to close. theguardian.com/society/2024/o…

I replied to this but wanted to highlight the errors in this doubling down. Systematic sampling is not random sampling and Small has specifically written about the problems with applying quant logics to qual sampling (How Many Cases Do I Need?). 1/
