Durham Cathedral this weekend. This is the successor to Lindisfarne Priory abandoned in 875 following Viking raids. The monks first moved to Chester-le-Street and then on to Durham in 995. The present Cathedral building was mostly built between 1093 and 1133. #medievalmonday

The beach in Whitehaven today. Beautiful hot and sunny weather. The old quay dates from 1687 and the lighthouse from before 1730. Both are grade II listed.

Haig Pit, Whitehaven, West Cumbria operated between 1919 and 1986. Workings extended 4 miles out under the sea bed. Between 1922 and 1931, 79 men died as a result of three methane gas explosions.

The Norman Chapel below Durham Castle constructed around 1080 is the oldest building in Durham. The patterns on the columns are natural from the local sandstone. The castle is part of the university so access is through a guided tour. #MedievalMonday
