Corymbia ficifolia, the Red Flowering Gum from WA. Is this your #EucalyptoftheYear? Last year, #friendsofficifolia drove a spirited campaign & helped the Red Flowering Gum place second! Can they bring the win back west in 2023? Vote now: surveymonkey.com/r/C8YT83X 📸: M Cooper

A $1.3m IanPotterFoundation grant will help a team of scientists led by us and Edith Cowan University (ECU) design strategies to protect critical peatland ecosystems in WA's South West, giving a fighting chance to rare species like the fascinating Sunset Frog #UWA Western Australian Museum bit.ly/3Yv8rEG

Been told that “leaf lichens” are rare to non-existent in SW WA, so is this a “leaf lichen” or just a lichen growing on a leaf? Found on Gahnia decomposita in long unburned Karri/tingle. #lichen #biodiversity

Just because it seems normal, doesn't mean it is. 'Shifting baseline syndrome' describes the gradual acceptance of degraded environmental conditions as the new normal. 📸: Cameron Shepherd

This World Frog Day let’s spare a thought for our incredible amphibian friends like the threatened Sunset Frog - endemic to the Walpole region of Western Australia. Frogs are in the most threatened class of vertebrates in the world and need our help more than ever. Pics: mine.

It's hard to fully grasp the new UN climate science report. Climate change can feel far away, like someone else’s problem. To make it real, I think about my home state of Western Australia. I've compiled what #IPCC says about current impacts of climate change & what's predicted🧵

Found masses of flowers in this Pitcher Plant, Cephalotus follicularis. The flower spikes on this one relatively short due to lack of competition from surrounding vegetation. #walpolewilderness

4 months after prescribed fire the bush is looking nice and green. Closer inspection reveals a large number of Jarrah and Balga deaths. Surviving Jarrah show significant canopy loss (many metres of height), heavy epicormic and lignotuber sprouts. Decades for full recovery.
