When will the next general election be held?

We've mapped out the most likely scenarios for polling day - an early election in May 2024, a late election in January 2025 and an early/late autumn 2024.

Great to work with Ben Paxton on these graphics instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/next…

Ben Paxton Alongside these are the limits on 3rd party spending: campaigning by groups like charities and trade unions. This accounts for a growing proportion of electoral spend - 8.5% in 2019, up from 3.3% in 2015

Our politicians are often selected by such small numbers of local party members that ties like this aren't that statistically unlikely (and then you can end up effectively choosing an MP from flipping a coin...) A really under-discussed moment of influence in the political system

Loads of great stories + advice from our guests on Preparing for Power (available wherever you get your podcasts etc.)

But here's just one key takeaway from each episode (+ an extra from the last episode, looking at what its like inside a new government's first days in power)

Former politicians and senior civil servants repeatedly tell us it's crucial to prepare for ALL general election outcomes, even those that seem unlikely

Really important paper from jack pannell on the questions parties will face if we get a hung parliament at the next election

Very excited to be launching Institute for Government election content today - lots to come between now and polling day.

But first, great content today from Ben Paxton Tim Durrant Joe Owen on calling an election, possible dates for next one & the value of some post-election stability 👇

Ben Paxton I’ve been tweeting about this since June.

Last date (Jan 25) will not happen unless Sunak decides he wants to destroy the Tories for a generation.

An election campaign over Xmas would guarantee a Canadian style 1993 wipe-out (see pic)

Melissa Ittoo Institute for Government Ben Paxton interesting, thank you
but we want a general election now, in 2023, before this unelected PM makes any more unmandated changes to our future

Ben Paxton Seems to me the 'obvious' answer given a PM needing confidence of the House and a new House elected is a new PM instantly. But, can see the argument the new House could have confidence for a short period to allow a handover to be more graceful.

Ben Paxton Would the alternative be the current PM/executive remain in place for a period of time whilst the incoming 'shadow'?

What happens if there's a crisis in the interim? Could the monarch expedite the handover so the old PM isn't in control?
