How kind of Jessamine Chan to include Torn Apart on her list of top 10 books of the 21st Century for The New York Times! I love how my book about real-life family policing and her amazing novel The School for Good Mothers complement each other so surprisingly. 🙏🏾

Delta flight attendants (DeltaAFA) are hitting back against Delta’s new flag policy, which follows last week’s racist harassment of two FAs who were wearing Palestinian flags. This is really cool.

Sonya Massey should be alive today. We are thinking of Sonya & the unfortunate sisterhood of Black women & gender-expansive ppl who have been killed by police. Our sisters will not be forgotten, & no form of police violence against Black women & girls will be ignored #SayHerName

The Sonya Massey killing was worse than described- if thats even possible. The officer who killed her - Sean Grayson- worked for 4 different police/Sheriffs departments in 6 years. He also had two DUI convictions. Yet he was still holding a badge. This cant be reformed.

From eugenics to mass sterilization, welfare restructuring, abortion politics, birthright citizenship debate & family policing, it’s always been a question of who is deemed fit to have (& keep) children & who isn’t—and yes, Black women’s childbearing & eugenics are still central.

“Today’s child welfare system still revolves around an ideology that confuses poverty with child neglect and attributes the suffering caused by structural inequities to parental pathologies.” Dorothy Roberts

People got really worked up when I described this as fascism. Here they are violently displacing marginalized citizens who have committed no crimes and destroying their belongings. This is simply traumatizing vulnerable people so NIMBYs don’t have to see them. This fixes nothing.

There’s a thin line between the foster system and the juvenile & criminal legal systems—and Black children disproportionately cross over—because family policing drives them there.
