I have been volunteering as a historical tour guide in #Guelph for the last three seasons and love it but now have story envy after taking this walking tour in Werdenberg, Switzerland on the banks of the Rhine. This fascinating guide talks about buildings dating to the 1300s.

Ruminants like beef cattle have a special digestive system with four compartments in their stomach: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. This unique system allows them to break down tough plant materials, like grass, through a process called rumination.

Ford’s insider deals to pave over farmland & greenspace won’t solve the housing crisis. Greens will continue our effort to legalize gentle density & middle missing housing so we can quickly build homes people can afford in communities they love. #onpoli thestar.com/news/gta/doug-…

People think GMOs lead to increased pesticide use, when the opposite is true. In 20 years, GE crops reduced pesticide use by 8.2% & increased crop yields by 22%. To feed 8.1 billion people & reduce chemical inputs, GE crops are essential. Opponents don’t understand this. 1/

GE crops can add nutrition (see golden rice), allow plants to produce insect resistance without having to spray crops, & improve yield while reducing food waste. If we want to improve health of everyone, wouldn’t we want these tools? 2/

Problem: those who oppose GE technology objectively know the least about it. Many of these people don’t know whether tomatoes contain DNA (they do). Genetic engineering is wildly misunderstood by people who spread fear and falsehoods. Read more ⬇️ immunologic.substack.com/p/gmos-and-gen… 🧵

#DYK farmers will plant wheat in the fall to be grown over the winter for harvest next summer! Winter wheat is a key ingredient in baking recipes, and it also helps grain farming sustainably by keeping diseases and insects from harming the crops. => l8r.it/Mhi7

Ever wondered about the difference between sweet corn and grain corn? Sweet Corn: Juicy and tender, perfect for BBQs! Grain Corn: Grown for animal feed, tougher and starchier. Tempted to pick that roadside corn? It’s usually grain corn and entering the field is trespassing!

I would love to tell you about all the times crop protection saved a crop, kept food prices stable, or prevented hunger. But every time it happens, you don’t notice. → You just go to the supermarket. Agriculture, when it’s working, is invisible.
