Fellow bio-inorganic chemists, we think the hydrophobic pocket in hemoglobin/myoglobin not only prevents auto-oxidation of the heme (stabilize the oxy-heme) but also helps keep the active site five co-ordinate high spin which is vital for oxygen binding. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…
