For #MapMonday, more from the Exeter Chamber Map Book, circa 1756-60. Anyone who knows Exeter will recognise Southernhay, still a familiar green space in the heart of the city today.

This plan of the city and suburbs of Exeter dates back to 1765 and is from Benjamin Donne's 'Map of the County of Devon'. It was the first entirely new survey of Devon since the survey by Christopher Saxton in the 16th century. 📷 Townsend Maps T15 #MapMonday #MappingOurExeter

We’re in the process of sorting the recently donated records of Wippell and Co, ecclesiastical outfitters established in 1789. Yesterday one of our volunteers opened a box and found a parachute - a product of the company’s World War Two sideline.

We were represented here and it was great. Glorious weather and surroundings; wonderfully comprehensive presentations about Salcombe’s past from Roger and Abi.

This fascinating map was first printed by Dr. Thomas Shapter in 'The History of the Cholera in Exeter in 1832'. It identifies the location of deaths by cholera and sites relating to the city’s response to the pandemic. 📷 Cartography Coll./A.3.a.vi #MapMonday #MappingOurExeter

We’re holding a Memory Café on 6 September – it’s a chance to reminisce about Taunton, see some documents that might bring back memories and spark a chat, and have a cup of tea and a natter to share your stories. We’d love to see you there! tinyurl.com/5n93a9ha 🫖

The new exhibition in our searchroom focuses on our ongoing Quarter Sessions cataloguing project, which now extends from 1734 to 1781. Includes the tale of a clergyman who challenged someone to a duel and (allegedly) chased them for 100 yards with pistols.
