Data released after FOI requests shows 51 people died in Home Office-provided accommodation in 2024, more than a twelvefold rise since 2019. There is a shocking lack of scrutiny + accountability from the Home Office and a complete disregard for the lives of this vulnerable group.

As Free Movement reported, the High Court has upheld an award of £99k damages to a refugee. The govt likes to brag about rounding people up and detaining them with a view to removal, but all too often the person have every right to stay in the UK. freemovement.org.uk/high-court-uph…

Most refugees, even those with family here, have no safe way to reach the UK. Crossing the Channel may be their only option. It’s simply cruel to punish people who are fleeing persecution and conflict for trying to find safety or reunite with loved ones. theguardian.com/world/2025/feb…

A horrific case, raising more serious questions about the companies running asylum accommodation. Why are these companies allowed to keep extracting huge profits from services whilst failing in their duty of care and presiding over a litany of failings? hyphenonline.com/2025/02/17/meh…

🚨 First, another security-obsessed immigration bill. Then, live deportations on TV. Now, a refugee citizenship ban. We won't stand for this. Write to your MP now and demand solutions that work, starting with safe routes & a fair family reunion system 👇 act.safepassage.org.uk/ask-your-mp-op…

As Prof Mary Bosworth says, the govt's new contract for more removal work portrays a lack of fresh ideas. It highlights a failure, or perhaps refusal, to understand how this business destroys both the lives of those subject to it and undermines wider social cohesion in the UK.

EDM 809 tabled in UK Parliament recognises: immigration detention is costly + punitive; cheaper, more humane alternatives to detention exist; the Home Office undertook community-based Alternative to Detention pilots. The EDM merits wide support from MPs edm.parliament.uk/early-day-moti…

MPs are questioning why Labour's Border Security, Asylum & Immigration Bill changes previous guidance on the right to naturalisation after 'illegal' entry. This change was made w/o consultation + minimal communication, so has not been subject to scrutiny. committees.parliament.uk/publications/4…

Many cells in UK detention centres are smaller than an average parking space. People are detained there by the Home Office without a time limit, often for months or years at a time, locked in that tiny space for up to 12 hours a day. This has to stop. It's time for a time limit.
