St. Gebre Menfes Qidus established the Zuqualla monastery in the 12th c, an important pilgrimage site. Mount Zuqualla, an extinct volcano located 80 km from Addis Ababa. This monastery church was destroyed, in 1531. The church was later rebuilt by King Menelik II in 1880 #ዝቋላ

In the 15th C, the Ethiopian church developed a strong devotion to Mary. King Zera Ya'equob added 30 feast days and commissioned numerous manuscripts. The British Library holds one of the oldest depictions of the Virgin and Child from this era.
