Day 3 of Paulinella field sampling and we’re up to 43 cells found, 6 environmental samples preserved for genomics, and 11 individual cells isolated to varying degrees. We’re on a roll and still have a full day ahead of us! Debashish Bhattacharya Timothy Stephens Erin Chille Susanne Ruemmele

This paper was a lot of hard work, but worth it. We start to learn how Paulinella meets its CO2 needs in the chromatophore (…icro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…). Congratulations Arwa G, Timothy Stephens John Reinfelder Victoria Calatrava and Arthur G. Rutgers SEBS Rutgers NJAES Carnegie Science

We have an opening in my lab for a postdoc with expertise in algal/seaweed biotechnology, in particular, metabolic engineering and carbohydrate biochemistry, with some bioinformatics training. Email me at [email protected], if this fits your background and aspirations

Happy to have contributed to this excellent paper by @KEdougan in the group of Cheong Xin (CX) Chan that provides a model of how whole-genome duplication shaped evolution of the heat-tolerant coral algal symbiont, Durusdinium (science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…). Algae rock! Great work everyone.

It was great to have Hwan Su Yoon in our lab this week and to go Paulinella hunting with him in my hometown! Truly one of my role models and one of the best algal biologists ever!

What a pleasure to have Hwan Su Yoon from Sungkyunkwan University in S. Korea visiting us in New Jersey. His group is doing path-breaking, creative algal research. Our long-term collaboration has always been joyful and spirited.

Congratulations to Erin Chille for her paper on why genotype matters when studying coral stress responses (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…). You can hear the live version at Evolution Meetings. Congrats also to co-authors Timothy Stephens Deeksha Misri @EmmaStrand4 and @HolliePutnam

Great talks at the #Evol2024 meeting so far from the Debashish Bhattacharya lab (Timothy Stephens and Gabby Panayotakis) and then from my college bff Kyle T. David 🍄 in the RokasLab giving a fantastic talk and accepting the @ASNAmNat Early Career award! It was a revelation. Congrats everyone!

Today Erin Chille and I presented at #Evol2024. Her talk was, “Gene expression response to physiological stress in two Hawaiian corals is dominated by ploidy and genotype” and mine was “Alignment-free phylogenetics to increase the value of environmental genomic data” Evolution Meetings

The start of an exciting project with our many collaborators on converting waste Sargassum seaweed into bioproducts of value. The work is funded by Schmidt Sciences and is described here: rutgers.edu/news/scientist…
