We need a picture-in-the-picture on this congressional coverage, so we can see what’s happening on the streets of DC. What’s going on outside??

Tonight’s inauguration celebration is an introvert’s dream. I feel like I’m at the cool people party, and I don’t have to interact with, or be seen by, any strangers. 🙂

Yesterday’s events in Nashville show again how policing produces violence. A woman is dead & police officer hospitalized over nothing. MNPD says it deescalates. I didn’t see that. Why was he searching her bag?? Why chase her, threaten to tase her, then tase her? No good reasons.

And it’s not just one case. It’s decades of unknown cases, and the culture of fear that fosters among the people who find themselves subject to the system.

Looking forward to this event! Join me for a moving film, great conversation with Rahim Buford and others, and to learn more about the work of Choosing Justice Initiative. We’ll be introducing our new Gideon 2.0 Project curated by Shawn Whitsell.

In Tennessee, juveniles aren't immune from tough sentencing laws. Today, we're talking to Jeremy Young about the Fault Lines documentary #51YearsBehindBars. It follows the case of Almeer Nance, a Knoxville man who was sentenced to 51 years in prison when he was just 16.

I never tweet, but this election matters. I’m ready for Freddie O’Connell. I’ve known Freddie for years, and he’s a true public servant. He’s smart, thoughtful, and hard-working. He knows all the Metro issues. I trust him to lead for the good of all Nashvillians.

One of the quiet scandals of our legal system is the abysmal quality of representation for the poor that judges tolerate, incentivize, and benefit from. You’ll see it in any courtroom in the country.

This right here is the Truth. This is Lawyer Ethics 101. A lawyer advising a client cannot have divided loyalties. Metro recognizes that once litigation begins, but the conflict exists long before then. The “city’s” interests aren’t always the same as “the people’s” interests.
