Once you introduce checks someone needs to do them.

Trucks and drivers waiting for them need to stop, eat and rest somewhere.

And if the facility where they are conducted is not 24/7, they also need to sleep somewhere.

The disgrace here is of a Conservative MP who thinks they are speaking for Gibraltar but appears to be paying no attention to what the actual government of the territory is saying and doing because this is becoming just another excuse to say bad things about the EU.

More representative of the real UK and particularly England - for good and bad -than any number of politicians across the political spectrum claiming to plug into the country's real values in a resolutely dull manner.

We don't (generally) riot, but laugh at ourselves.

Trade barriers raise costs for business and consumers alike, we don't know by how much but the general principle is clear enough. Don't have import checks? Then run the risk of more unsafe food entering. There are also options to reduce costs. theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

New Coppola Comment post, on the Trump campaign's genius idea to use import tariffs as weapons in a new trade war. They didn't work last time, so why would they work now? coppolacomment.com/2024/04/trade-…

1/ One of the common reactions to this was that the WTO rules compel the UK to introduce checks on EU goods.

First, well done everyone on knowing about the WTO and Most Favoured Nation. I'm proud and apologetic in equal measure.

Second, that's not entirely true (in practice).
