Remarkable temperature gradient forecast tomorrow afternoon. Bordering on the hot to bordering on the cold in 60 miles.

The Mediterranean Sea had an average sea surface temperature (SST) in August of over 28C. No other month in any other year (not just other Augusts) has ever topped 28C.

It may have been our coolest summer since 2015, but GLOBALLY and even across EUROPE it was the hottest summer on record 🌡️ A reminder that climate isn’t just about what happens outside your own front door. We are part of a much bigger thing.

Great and unusual satellite imagery this morning. Cut off, almost stationary low pressure system centred in the Bay of Biscay. Spinning bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms towards southern England. Also pulling in very warm air westwards.

The rapid rise of extreme and record breaking rainfall events is entirely to be expected. Simple physics

First time up for a couple of weeks - bike issues and pressure of work(!) Really humid and steamy. Odd patches of sun for a lucky few.

As forecast it was an incredible temperature gradient locally this afternoon. A hot and steamy 26°C in Pershore but a decidedly chilly and damp 14°C in Salisbury - just 60 miles away as the crow flies.

Rainfall totals since yesterday. Unusual to see such widespread large totals over lowland southern England. 40-50mm very widely. Average total September rainfall around 60mm here. Quite a bit more to come over next few days.

Nearly 20mm of rain in 15 minutes in Swansea from these thunderstorms this evening. That’s a lot! Imagine there’s a bit of surface water flooding.

At Victoria Park, Swansea over a month's worth of rain 87.2mm was recorded yesterday! 43.8mm of this fell in 1 hour around 8-9pm. 18.8mm in 15 minutes during torrential rain.
