Amazing! The Nick of Time Foundation recently held it's 100th heart screen event. 680 youth screened with ECG and all learned CPR/AED in one day! I am honored to work with NickofTimeFoundation and such a dedicated volunteer workforce. #family DP Foundation UW Medicine UW Sports Cardiology

Watching people grow, step-by-step, often makes you not really appreciate the journey till the end. Tyler Lockett ‘s journey was impressive to witness. Another #Seahawk that made me a better professional and man. Thanks, Turtle 🐢

A little warm up prior to our athlete ECG workshop next month AMSSM. What’s the abnormality on this screening ECG of a 19-year-old athlete (if any)? What’s the next step in work up (if one is needed)? What’s the concern (if there is one)? #SportsCardiology #SportMedicine

Concern here is anterior T-wave inversions concerning for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Start with at least echocardiogram. May need more (cardiac MRI, other) depending on suspicion. #SportsCardiology

Another warm up ECG prior to our workshop later this month at AMSSM. What is/are the finding(s) here in this resting screening ECG of an athlete, if any? What’s the next step in workup, if any? #SportsCardiology #SportsMedicine

This shows a junctional escape rhythm. Notice the loss of the p wave part way through the rhythm strip (bottom). This is a normal variant in an asymptomatic athlete, and no further work up is required.

Updated (9 years!) data on NCAA athlete sudden cardiac arrest *or* death came out at #AMSSM2025 via Harry L. Galanty, MD Young Investigator Award winner Katherine Wainwright of UW Sports Medicine Fellowship, UW Family Medicine. Prospective study reconfirms high-risk athlete subgroups.🫀#SportsCardiology

Last year, Petek et. al.’s 20-year study showed the incidence of sudden cardiac *death* in NCAA athletes is decreasing. Hopefully, that continues as we get better at identifying, treating, and (hopefully) preventing SCA. More work to do! #SportsCardiology ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CI…

No cardiac events or deaths in 1300 athlete-years for genetic heart disease genotype (+) / phenotype (-) athletes who continued to participate. Return to play for most athletes who are genotype (+) but phenotype (-) is safe. #SportsMedicine

Rate of sudden cardiac arrest / death in athletes before & during COVID pandemic was the *SAME*. “Many […] cases shown in social media […] occurred before the pandemic yet claimed COVID-19 infection or vaccination raised the risk...” #SportsCardiology pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39992657/

Important question that often comes up right at the beginning of a season. Even more complicated when the athlete doesn’t have easy access to advanced testing! #SportsCardiology #SportsMedicine
