A hero to me is a man who was terrorized by police, beaten by police, charged with murder by police, held for bail, attacked by the Mayor and the Premier for being released, besieged by an unsympathetic press and prosecuted on no theory who still thanks Canada for his freedom.

I’m looking forward to joining Tammie Sutherland on Breakfast Television today at 7:30am to discuss the emotional verdict yesterday in the Zameer murder trial and what lessons we can learn from this tragedy.

Police have a monopoly on information when it comes to criminal investigations.

The question now is what kind of accountability do they face for labeling this an 'intentional and deliberate' act? And what of politicians who rushed to condemn a man who hadn’t even been tried?

This case should also remind people why we have bail and the importance of it. If Mr. Zameer had not been granted bail he would have sat in prison for 3 years serving time for a crime he did not commit.

Of all my courtroom moments this shoots to the top
“Mr. Zameer, you’re free to go sir,” Justice Anne Molloy told him, “you have my deepest apologies for what you have been through.”

This case should remind everyone how important and fragile the presumption of innocence is. Our police chief and political leaders were quick to toss aside that protection to push their own political agendas. Zameer deserves an apology from Doug Ford and Toronto Police.

Congratulations to Nader R Hasan and Alex Heine for successfully defending the presumption of innocence in the Zameer case. This case was a tragedy, but anyone with knowledge of the evidence knows this wasn’t a murder.
