11 years ago on April 11th, Jonathan Winters left us for what he called “the big dirt nap.” He was born on November 11th and, like me, was married on September 11th. Elevens loomed large in Jon’s life. Here I am sitting on his lap during one of our many lunches in Santa Barbara.

Sam Kinison died 32 years ago today in a tragic car crash. He was 38. I had a complicated relationship with Sam, but there is no denying his significance as an artist. At his best, he was a brilliant change agent and no one was ever more compelling and captivating on stage.

Born on this day in 1921, novelty recording artist Sheb Wooley who also recorded under the name Ben Colder. He is best remembered for the 1958 hit “The Purple People Eater.” He died in 2003.

A great comedian !!

Mort Sahl, he hauled stale American comedy into the 60s
