The main entrance to Des Moines Water Works Park from Fleur Drive will close Monday, March 10, for road repavement. This area will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic through April 26. Please abide by all signage. You can access the park from the south. See the map.

Some of the early bloomers in the Arie den Boer Arboretum inside Des Moines Water Works Park could be popping by the weekend with the expected warmer weather. The arboretum is home to more than 700 crabapple trees that represent 200 varieties.

Crabapple watch update: About 10 percent of the crabapple trees inside the Arie den Boer Arboretum are now in full bloom! There are close to 200 varieties and 700 trees in the arboretum. The main entrance to the park across from Gray’s Lake has reopened!

Did you know? A crabapple tree has a life span of about 30-40 years. Our Grounds staff grafts the old varieties in Des Moines Water Works Park so the legacy of Arie den Boer may live on. About 60% of the trees inside the arboretum will be in full bloom by April 18-20.
