100 years ago in the Des Moines Register: Republican Warren G. Harding defeats James M. Cox for the presidency. Harding died less than 3 years later (Aug. 2, 1923), when he had a heart attack in San Francisco.
The Des Moines Register's Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Frank Miller created this illustration after John Lennon was shot and killed Dec. 8, 1980. It ran on 1A of the Register, Dec. 11, 1980.
Earliest mention of Hank Aaron in the Des Moines Register is June 7, 1952, when he and the Indianapolis Clowns played the Kansas City Monarchs in a Negro League game at Pioneer Memorial Stadium in Des Moines.

Cheers to the late Harriette Curley, a Drake University grad hired at Perkins Elementary in DM Public Schools 75 years ago this fall. Bigoted parents protested. Administration supported her. She persevered, a successful career. 1st Black FT teacher since segregated DM schools of 1870s.
