Dendrophyllidae is the third most specious family of corals! Crazy ecological & morphological variation says Francesca Benzoni at #APCRS2023 Lots of “dark diversity” of these corals, with some beautiful new species on the way!

New paper out today in ASIH. We review the occurrence of Paracheilinus (Flasher Wrasses) in Australia and its remote territories. Four are known to occur, including one new species and one new distribution record. They are summarised as follows: 1/9

Certain types of sea urchins will pick up a shell with their tube feet and ‘wear’ it, with a behavior known as “covering reaction”, mainly because they shy away from light. So aquarium enthusiasts 3D-printed tiny hats and they actually wear them.

On this day in 1977, Fred Sanger published the first paper demonstrating "Sanger sequencing", opening the doors to read DNA and earning him a 1980 Nobel prize. Absolutely revolutionary work🫡 The first Sanger sequencing image. Figure 1, PNAS 74:5463:5467 1977

Back in 2009 I began a mission with Western Australian Museum to document hard coral diversity in the Kimberley, aiming to enrich our understanding of the region's biodiversity and biogeography. 171 sites and 15 years later I have some remarkable results to share🧵 museum.wa.gov.au/research/recor…

Coral bleaching is creeping into Coral Bay, Ningaloo, but the good news is that only a few species, and in some cases, just certain individuals are showing signs of stress. Encouragingly, the reef remains vibrant 🌈 , with plenty of healthy corals thriving! 🌊🐠🪸

Ningaloo’s northern reefs are bleaching with some corals already dying.🪸💔 Even ancient Porites, centuries old, are ghostly white. But south & outer reef corals fight on. 🤞 Hoping for cooler waters & recovery. 🌊🙏
