Happy Birthday, Shakespeare! Visit Dulwich Archive to celebrate with the First Folio, some stirring renditions of the Henry V St Crispin's Day speech, and even Shakespeare himself (in party attire, naturally). #ShakespearesBirthday
#onthisday we celebrate National #Shakespeare Day! Shakespeare's years in the City of London unfolded right on our doorstep, and we’re delighted to hold a copy of the First Folio, printed less than a mile from where the library stands today, as well as many other wonderful texts.
To honour #Shakespeare 's birthday we have put on display Wodehouse Library both volumes of our partial First Folio, 1623. The comedies are open at Love's Labours Lost & the histories at Henry V.
We have today added a teapot to our collection of Dulwich College crested china. It will live on #PGWodehouse 's desk along with the pig, the tank and the jug.
After the ill fated Endurance Expedition 1914-16, #Shackleton gifted the James Caird to his friend, John Quiller Rowett, Dulwich College 1889-91, in exchange for £70,000 sponsorship for the Quest expedition. When Shackleton died Rowett gifted the boat to their old school.
#OTD 1924 The James Caird arrived Dulwich College. She was 1st housed outside the Science Building, when that was destroyed in #WW2 she was moved to a new 'nook' outside the swimming pool. After a spell Royal Museums Greenwich she lived in the North Cloister & is now in The Laboratory.
All that glisters... ✨

The inscription reads 'PENCES POVR MOYE DV' (the letters ‘DV’ stand for the Latin words ‘Deo Volente’) which translates as ‘Think of me, God willing’.

Their son, also Belgrave Ninnis, born 22 June 1887 was Dulwich College 1900-06. When #Shackleton had no room for him on the Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition, he joined Mawson's Australian Antarctic Expedition & died 14 January 1913 following a fall into a crevasse.
Our Polar Postcard this month showcases the work of Simone Eringfeld, a PhD student studying Antarctic Soundscapes. Simone has recently returned from fieldwork in Antarctica!
It's #WorldTheatreDay2024 !! The First Folio preserved 18 Shakespeare plays that may have been lost. It's amazing to think how many theatre productions were, and will be, produced because of those who created the First Folio. Read their remarkabke story in SHAKESPEARE'S BOOK!! 👇
