The Lattimore Iliad was published by UChicagoPress in 1951. By 1965, when his Odyssey was ready, his editor was at Harper & Row, & it went there.

It took Odysseus ten years to get home. It took Chicago nearly 75 to get an Odyssey.

Daniel Mendelsohn’s proved well worth the wait.

Finished this last night (after final session of terrific 4-part The New York Review of Books seminar with Daniel Mendelsohn). Then listened again to Backlisted Podcast on “Rings,” w/ John Mitchinson account of publishing translation.

Enjoying a sofa-bound late afternoon with this lovely book by ⁦Daniel Mendelsohn⁩. Counts as research for my post writing project but also just a really great read. Highly recommend. 📚

One of the most remarkable objects in is a marble table support with P. Casca Longus inscribed on it. Longus was the 1st assassin to stab Julius Caesar on (today in 44 BC). On his death Longus’ possessions were auctioned & this table was bought by a Pompeian
