On Monday, I think I'm going to make a thread of the editors that I've had the pleasure of working with this year and talk about some of the stories I wrote.

After seeing a number of posts on the topic, I really want to write a piece about disabled cartoonists who have come to understand themselves this way in the last three or so years.

I wish YouTube and Facebooks algorithms would quit showing me a bunch of parents making videos about their disabled kids with no care for how the disabled kid might feel in the future.

Be pragmatic with your hope, learn to build a business, ignore the endless negativity that has been pervasive in this industry for decades. Just because old roles no longer exist does not mean other opportunities haven't sprung up.

I don't know who needs to hear it, but if doing access work on social media is triggering/traumatizing you then it may be time to take step back from that work temporarily.

+1. A lot of journalists in this country who are entrenched in this industry still think that doing a J school degree is required to make a living. When, in fact, I think we're close to the point where it hinders development. See the UofR report on their school for proof of that

Every time I log on here Twitter decides to show me tweet after tweet of journalists being assholes to PR staffers.

Less of that would be great.

Doing that thing where I pitch ideas to the Twitterverse. I'd really like to write a piece early next year about why there is such a proliferation of disability memoirs being pubbed in the last couple of years. TLDR: I know the answer and would like to report that.

If someone tells you that you HAVE to work in a newsroom to be a good journalist, please don't believe them--as far as ignorant advice to freelancers goes, this outdated chestnut needs to be retired. What you truly need is experience reporting stories and reading good writing.
