Government Violates Charter Right to Strike: The province forces CUPE education workers to the Dispute Inquiry Board (DIB), breaching their bargaining rights. Workers are mobilizing and preparing for a Day of Action on Sept 21. Watch the Rory Gill video for more details.

This outrageous decision by Danielle Smith and the UCP government is heavy handed and shows a staggering disregard for our school workers. As a teacher I've seen it firsthand--educational support workers have been asked to do more and more, in increasingly complex classrooms.

Danielle Smith talking point: “We need controlled immigration because Alberta’s booming! But also, our education system can’t keep up. We’ve totally got that under control. Too many outsiders are straining the system THAT IS TOTALLY UNDER CONTROL.”

Danielle Smith talking point: “We need all hands on deck for school construction!” (Translation: If you’re in a municipality, brace yourself—cut the red tape or watch us use duct tape.)

Danielle Smith talking point: “Schools for everyone! Well, not everyone. Mostly private schools. But hey, we’ve got funds for them!”

Danielle Smith talking point: “We’ve got a surplus! 🎉 So we’re tossing $8.6B over 3 years to *maybe* build some new schools... eventually. And if not? Don’t worry—we’ve got modular classrooms, just like those ‘temporary’ trailers that stuck around 15 years.”

Danielle Smith talking point: “I believe in charter rights. The right to charter schools. The right to privatization. Charter schools are a charter right, amiright?!”

Danielle Smith talking point: “We’ll need more educators! But don’t expect them to be paid fairly—let’s just focus on infrastructure. Modulars. Hope and prosperity, Alberta is the land of hope and prosperity…..really just thriving and living our best life.”

The UCP government's move to force CUPE Alberta education workers to the Dispute Inquiry Board rather than respecting their collective bargaining rights means it's more important than ever to support these workers on their September 21 Day of Action! Hope to see you there on Saturday!

We still have EAs in Alberta who haven't been given a raise in over a decade. We still have a huge shortage of teachers and some are leaving because of how badly they're being treated. It's very typical of Danielle Smith to announce funding, with no plan for education staffing.
