#cruiseship lines make lots of PR about their ships being shore power ready. But either they are choosing to not make the connections, or the power is not available, even at the relatively few docks globally where there is shore power for cruise ships. #ShorePower #Greenwashing

In October 2020, GCAN reached out by mail to the boards of directors and executives of Carnival Corp, NCLH, RCCL, MSC, Disney and executives of subsidiary cruise lines with our Principles of Responsible Cruise Tourism, inviting discussion. An MSC PR person was the sole response.

As long as we continue to support this, we will never meet our GHG CO2 goals, no matter what we do. It’s crushing. #yyj #yyjpoli #bcpoli #cdnpoli #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction @DaveThompsonVIC Matt Dell @KristaLoughton @SusanKimYYJ Marianne Alto Marg Gardiner @rightstoday

#Cruise executives, and an occasional cruise ship engineer following the company's talking points, will try to convince you not to worry about "white smoke." Its just harmless "water vapor" they'll say. But don't be fooled. cruiselawnews.com/2019/09/articl…

Thanks CLIA | Cruise Lines International Association for documenting that of 1,200 ports where cruise ships call, 34 (under 3%) have active shore power, 24 (2%) have work funded. Zero private cruise destinations have shore power, despite intensive visitation. Not a significant climate solution. #ClimateCrisis

Exactly. Shore power is largely a marketing suggestion that has no relevance to the pollution being emitted and harming people today in communities where cruise ships call around the world.

A start. Moving the problem conveys ships are not welcome; however, the problems remain. Air pollution travels long distances, as can cruise passengers on buses (and planes into Barcelona). #ChooseNottoCruise #CruiseShipsKill #ClimateEmergency

Like prisons and nursing homes, cruise ships have a lot of people in close contact with each other for extended periods of time, making ideal conditions for both contact and airborne transmission of disease. And then spreading it onto communities.

Cruise ships at dock cost residents and communities from harm to health from air pollution. Ports put $ value on that harm to justify shore power, but don't own up to the harm lacking shore power. #CruiseShipsKill
