A student told me yesterday that my humanist values are simply repackaged Christian ones, so well done to Tom Holland et al for successfully reviving this argument among young Christians! We had a very good discussion about it and the student was delightfully sincere.

Discussed effective activism with some students today. Made me remember something I was taught by Cleve Jones - “Everything works!” People like to claim only one type of change making works but in reality you have to do everything. Get good at it all.

A calamitous day as universities across the USA send in heavily-armed police to arrest students protesting against a war. Gives the lie to conservative posturing on “free speech”, furthers the right wing agenda to demonize colleges, and undermines their own educational mission.

Today I gave a lecture on Humanism to a University of Sussex class studying philosophy of religion. I began with Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot photo, taken by Voyager 1. Lovely serendipity, then, to read that the probe is again sending readable data: the endeavor endures!

I too only met Dennett once. I saw him lining up for an event outside First Parish in Cambridge, MA and totally fanboyed. He was utterly delightful, happy to talk about his work with a grad student. I always found his work creative, provocative, and fun - as philosophy should be.

Such a perfect encapsulation of the weird assumptions I have to confront Every. Single. Day. Exhausting. 🙃
