NEW Longest prospective study of #LongCovidKids: 1.3K kids who tested pos for #COVID19 were followed up to 3y. Of note, 89% of cases were “mild” & 9% had no symptoms, & 80% had zero doses of vaccine. Mix of variants, but most were Omicron then Delta. /1 thelancet.com/action/showPdf…

Sadly, 23% of kids had #LongCovid at 3 mos. While #s fell over time, 13% at 6 mos, 8% at 1 yr, 6% at 18 mos, & 7% at 2 yrs still had #LongCovid. This is tragic, both because it means that 1 in 12 kids are still suffering a year later, & most of those remain ill longer term. /2

Adolescents/teens were at MUCH greater risk than age <12, as were those infected by earlier variants. Females & those w/ comorbidities were also at slightly increased risk. Infection w/ orig variant resulted in ⬆️ autoimmune disease. Vaccination reduced risk of #LongCovid. /3

In summary, this is an important study that breaks my heart. I’m grateful that early social distancing surely prevented a lot of #longCovid disability & autoimmune disease in kids, as did vaccines. I’m sad we still haven’t invested much in better indoor air quality in schools. /4

For those who were assured kids don’t get infected w/ #SARSCoV2…then ok they do but it’s mild…then ok #COVID19 in kids isn’t ALWAYS mild, but it’s only serious in kids w/ other medical conditions…then ok it can be serious in prev healthy kids but not long-term #LongCovid… /5

Well, you have been misinformed. Some of that was probably accidental & some of it was willful by people who wanted things to get back to “normal” (especially with the economy). Which means, among other things, kids attend school so parents attend work & business thrives! /6

I am a mom of 3 kids, & I want my kids in school. School is VITAL for kids’ social & intellectual development, & it’s also a safe haven for many who depend on it for everything from nutrition to adult role models. I’m not suggesting lockdown or closing school so don’t @ me. /7

But the fact is that we having a growing number of adults AND kids who are still symptomatic yrs after a positive test or even disabled by #LongCovid. That’s a looming #publichealth disaster & an economic one too. statnews.com/2024/06/06/lon…. /8

The fact that even publications like Fortune (fortune.com/2023/08/21/lon…) & Wall Street Journal (wsj.com/health/wellnes…) are publishing about #LongCovid tells you this isn’t only about health. It’s a big economic issue too. /9

I think now is the time to demand high indoor air quality standards & invest urgently in meeting them, esp for schools. Until we have effective #LongCovid treatment, we must reduce infections & new cases of LC. Masks & vaccines will both help but aren’t enough. /End #MedTwitter

atomless Example 4: We can see areas where the summer wave genuinely seems to be over, like Buckinghamshire. Checking the dashboard again, we can see that they're still testing lots, but have been seeing a real decline in prevalence. Lucky Bucks! 10/11

If XEC causes even a medium sized wave right on the back of KP.3.1.1+... that's going to be a whole load of sickness, death, and disability caused this summer and autumn by a pandemic that's mild and over and just a cold. 🙄

Aren't Republicans weird? They're so angry all the time, Aren't they? And They're never ever happy. Republicans are always whining about being cheated out of something or being cancelled, even when, especially when, they have so much more than most people. They're so consumed
