I was honored to represent the residents of District 9 in the Louisiana State Senate. My concentrations were education and economic development

If only it was once again recognized as the Queen City of the South. Commerce, banking, manufacturing, distribution, energy all lost in my lifetime.

If real economic growth, not the phony populist version we always get, was the main effort for the next mayor, then city revenue would rise, and there would be plenty for infrastructure improvements. Sadly, I wouldn't count on it, so better buy a high water vehicle.

Our litigious society is a major reason our economy does not serve us well. The question is will enough meaningful reform escape the state Senate in an unamended form to do any good? My 20 year political career tells me no, but maybe I will be surprised.

Let's not forget that the mayor and Council have a role in all this. The talking point they cite is the "unfairness" of the numbers in jail. The numbers they ignore are how these people got there in the first place. "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime"

If I were a cynic I would question why Biden's diagnosis was released on a Sunday as Democrats and the media were being savaged for covering up his mental decline. It's funny how these things just seem to happen.

Too bad so much of the French Quarter resembles a phony tinseltown. The true beauty is still there, just with the city's acquiescence all covered up. We have abandoned our history for a cheap version of Las Vegas. We brag about our culture while doing nothing to protect it.

In my first Senate term, even after the one time Katrina revenue windfall, the budget was as low as $27 billion. My question....can the citizens point to $24 billion worth of improvement in a dozen years or so since?

We must find a compromise for people like this. No doubt millions entered criminally under Biden, those are who must be sent home. For people living here for years, even questionably, there should be common sense. Congress must fix this.

This race will pivot on whomever promises the most big government free stuff paid for by taxing greedy businesses. The problem, after decades of Democratic populist governance, there are few businesses rich enough to tap. Socialism works until you run out of other people's money.

All Democratic Senators and three Republican Senators just voted for the largest tax increase in history on all Americans of every income level. Just sayin'!

Conrad Appel (@conradappel) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Wow, the state and city are being asked to fund and guarantee low income housing in the Plaza Tower for nearly $1 million per unit.

A lot of these great wins are in rural areas. Most people in need of opportunities live in cities and surrounding regions. City leaders must stop the "us vs. them" attitude toward business and do what is needed to attract wealthy residents.

The field lacks any diversity of political philosophy. So we can largely expect a continuation of policies that have been an anathema to economic growth. Better governance alone is not enough to overcome the burden of social populism.

If key evidence was left out then we should expect that the prosecutor or whomever that allowed that to happen to be fired. Do I expect that? Not a chance. On the other hand, these two upstanding citizens could be innocent, could be.

Please also ask why critical evidence apparently was not available for the trial of the two shooters who paralyzed a UNO student

That may have been true many decades ago, but that isn't as true as it once was. All sales taxes generated in the city flow back to the city and schools, none goes to the state. As commerce has declined & people have left NOLA state income taxes have fallen proportionately.

After watching the mayoral debate, it is clear that all candidates believe that if we just double down on what we have been doing with new leadership we will reverse decades of decline. Does anyone really think that will work?
