Seeing all debate surrounding EF ratings, I appreciate the team Storm Chase Canada NFP for having a speaker on tornado damage surveys at their Mar conference.
Dr Connell Miller, researcher for Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦, went over the complexities of doing the survey & the science that goes behind a…
Mapping some challenging wildfire-stricken territory in BC with Jack Hamilton for Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦. It’ll be interesting to see the kind of data we’re able to get about potential tornadoes in the area!
To learn more about this rare event, Jack Hamilton and I are in British Columbia with our drones to document this event with high-resolution imagery for Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦!
Thanks to Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦's Connell Miller and Lesley Elliott for providing me with detailed insight on Canada's first tornado of the year, tying for Ontario's earliest documented twister (March 16). Jeff Renaud #ONstorm #ONwx theweathernetwork.com/en/news/previe…
Afternoon session for the Western Engineering 1st year design showcase for Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦 projects. Some really interesting concepts on display!
The Western Engineering 1st year design showcase is today! Love to see the tornado education projects “sponsored” by Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦!
And that is a wrap! A very productive and fruitful week at @ibh_org. We finished off with a bang, firing tennisball-sized hail at our instrumentation to test their upper limits. Many thanks to everyone at IBHS Hail Study who went out of their way to accommodate us this week!
Blink and you'll miss it! Last day at IBHS Hail Study Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety lab, with slow-motion video of simulated wind-driven hail using angled strikes on our hailpads. Terminal velocity plus equivalent sideways component results in total velocity of over 115 km/h for 3.2 cm stones (1/2)
Foam In The Field: Northern Hail Project 🇨🇦 Researcher Connell Miller shares details of using these foam boards during their #hail field research. Listen in! Western University IBHS Hail Study
In 2023, Canada exceeded $3 billion in insured damage from natural catastrophes and severe weather events for the second consecutive year while the U.S. experienced record losses of more than $50 billion from severe convective storms. Northern Hail Project 🇨🇦 Western University
The NHP are with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety in Richburg S. Carolina this week undertaking important tests for our hail monitoring equipment. The high-speed video shows a 5.1 cm (2') ice spehere being fired at a specialized hail sensor at 118 kph (over 73 mph) for calibration purposes. #hail
Testing out the Northern Hail Project 🇨🇦 disdrometers (hail sensors) with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety / IBHS Hail Study hail cannon!
