Yesterday 22 of us flew to Cairns for our Compass Study Tour 2024. Kicked off this morning with the Barramundi farm. Impressive growth rates with oxygen levels, temperature & feed the important factors. We even had a go at catching & spotted 4m croc in the river #compasstour24

Sugarcane fields everywhere here and we caught up with Paul Rossi near Gordonvale this morning for a rundown of their machinery and processes for the season. All on a different scale working just one row at a time. #compasstour24

Earnt our pub meals for this evening with a 6.6km walk through Behana Gorge to Clamshell Falls with some good hills along the way! #compasstour24

Sugar Mill at Gordonvale for a very comprehensive tour. So many moving parts & different steps to extract all the sucrose. Mill operates 24/7 about 23 weeks/year turning freshly cut cane into raw sugar crystals. All steam powered, very little waste #compasstour24

A soak at Innot Hot Springs, naturally hot water coming from Nettle Creek pumped into pools nearby, followed by a freezing dip (for some who were brave enough) at Millaa Millaa Falls this afternoon.

Wound our way up to the top of the range to see the Vestas team at Mount Emerald Wind Farm this morning. 53 turbines 3.3 - 3.45mW towers with hubs about 100m high. Challenges in construction on an old bomb site with unexploded ordnances. #compasstour24

Next up was coffee & papaya at Skybury. Your of the potting shed, hot house and orchards as well as seeing the freshly harvested coffee berries being processed. Followed by a delicious morning tea with fresh coffee, fruit & scones with papaya jam & cream #compasstour24

Last farm visit, Australian Chocolate Farm just out of Port Douglas. What started as a hobby/weekender on their block has turned into a full time production with cocoa grown and turned into chocolate onsite. #compasstour24

Caught up with SouthernDIRT to learn from the UWA team about the Grower Group Alliance #smartdams WET Tool. This platform is designed to model and explore on farm performance and costs associated with dams, roaded catchments and evaporation treatments.
