You have to remember there was a time when LGBT people like myself could never have imagined seeing LGBT people in politics. It's taken for granted today as the context is lost in time. It's meaningful to those who lived through it. Unionism has a lot of catching up to do.

Today I led on the Ulster Unionist Party motion calling for an Executive led Loneliness strategy, which was passed unanimously. I got to reflect on a conversation I had, 35 years ago, with an elder lady who came into the butchers shop I worked in mostly for the chat.

UUP would have been better off going into Opposition in the first place. It's hardly surprising there is disagreement in a four-party Executive. It happens in every Executive there has ever been.

As a unionist, I support improving community relations. It does not make us any less unionist. Emma Pengelly's outreach was positive. It gave our society hope that things can change. Unionism must win converts for it to sustain itself. Negativity will lose the union, not outreach

What we're seeing here is moderate unionism vs hardline unionism. The fact it's even being considered who to stand against shows it's not party-political but rather ideological. If the union is to have a future, moderate unionism needs to win.

Anyone who has ever stood for election will know how much time and effort it takes. And more importantly, responsibility and ideas to improve the area for the community. It takes a lot of work. It's more than just smiling for a photo or making a speech.
