More southern mountain caribou roam Western Canada today than in previous decades. However, new research from Dr. Clayton Lamb finds that herd numbers are too fragile to sustain themselves without continued intervention: bit.ly/49UEh3k

NEW PAPER: We disentangled the effects of habitat alteration & climate on white-tailed deer densities, an invasive spp. disrupting western Canada’s boreal food web. We were surprised to learn that climate had a clear signal, but habitat alteration didn't doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17…

A thread on inappropriate (re)introductions. It’s a little long (sorry) and perhaps a little grumpy (sorry again). Arguing against the work of others is rarely a good look, especially as we are all, essentially, on the same side, but… 1/21

Exceptional paper on 'boo conservation. To restore caribou: kill A LOT of wolves over the medium term. But it's all for nought unless we also restore A LOT of habitat. Urgent: stop destroying caribou habitat, as many provincial gov'ts are doing esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ea…

This is a great thread and example from Canada of bending the curve on biodiversity loss - and that achieving recovery of threatened spp (Target 4 of the Global Biodiversity Framework) can involve difficult choices (reducing wolf numbers in this case).

For the folks interested in the technical aspects, we built an integrated population model (IPM) with 40 subpopulations that tracked the fate of 10,000 caribou, an entire population covering hundreds of thousands of square kilometres. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ea…

If you envision caribou on the landscape, as I do, and not just in your pocket on the flip side of a 25cent coin, then this work by Clayton Lamb offers hope & guidance.
