I am so tired of the narrative that healthcare disasters are "one-offs" and that it is one bad place that is the problem. Anyone telling you that the situation in dispatches is only happening in the hospital seen is either misguided or misleading. This is UK EM in many places.

I encourage the people of NI to watch #Dispatches on C4 tonight. What you will see is shocking and replicated in EDs across the UK and here at home in NI. You must ask yourself if what you see tonight is acceptable. Do we want this for our parents and grandparents?

This is not unique. It’s the reality of working in Emergency Medicine just about anywhere in the UK today. This could have been any of our departments. And both staff and patients deserve better.

Royal College of Emergency Medicine has been calling this crisis for some time. It looks like people are actually dying waiting with treatable conditions. Solving hospital capacity constraints is vital for patient care.
