Nothing in Biology—whether synthetic or naturally-occurring—is truly orthogonal. Devices and modules may be more or less autonomous but not orthogonal, which is a qualitative, yes/no notion. Mere language does not create reality. But I see the term over & over in SynBio papers 🤔

New publication on wood colonising microbial communities. For fungal diversity, the larger environmental surrounding was of high relevance, while bacterial community composition was strongly affected by soil contact. doi.org/10.1007/s00253…

…and I just wrote in an Introduction section of a paper in press that the composition of soil microbiomes cannot yet be predicted based on physicochemical soil data… I appreciate efforts falsifying it.
