Cannot overstate how excited I am to welcome the visionary and legendary Annie Jieping Zhang (@Mattersw3b 端傳媒 Initium Media) to Yale as a Poynter fellow. She'll discuss China reporting through political upheavals, role of new technologies, and hopes in the diaspora:

It can't be emphasized enough how difficult it is to get detailed official information out of Xinjiang. The sentencing document at the heart of this story is incredibly rare and so is the quality and depth of the reporting Darren Byler has undertaken to bring it to life.

Thanks so much to Steve Jones, whose blog is one of the most insightful China ethnographic-history site around, for this intro to minjiandanganguan -- our platform for China's independent history movement. Check out his intro--it answers a lot of question about what it's all about.

I love reading Darren Byler beautiful writing & meticulous, deeply humane research. But I hate reading it for the horrors documented.

“At that time, the relevant laws and regulations had not yet been promulgated, and legal publicity work had not yet been implemented. [...] Every legal provision related to this case was announced and implemented after 2015.”
