Modify Learning Materials: Adapt materials to suit the child’s needs, such as enlarging text, using clear fonts, and simplifying images. Digital tools with adjustable settings (contrast, brightness, font size) can be very helpful in customizing the learning experience.

Provide Clear Verbal Guidance: Use clear, direct language to describe visual tasks and environments. For example, narrating what’s happening in the environment or verbally guiding the child through an activity can help them understand visual cues more effectively.

Promote Consistent Routines: A consistent daily routine helps children with CVI predict and prepare for what’s coming, reducing cognitive load. The more familiar they are with their environment and activities, the easier it will be for them to navigate visually.

Use Movement to Draw Attention: Children with CVI may respond better to movement than stationary objects. Use gentle motion (e.g. moving a toy or an object back and forth) to help capture their attention and encourage visual engagement.

Collaborate as Specialists: Work with vision specialists, occupational therapists, neurologists to develop individualized education plans (IEPs) and therapeutic strategies. A multi-disciplinary approach ensures interventions meet the child’s specific visual needs & abilities.

CVI can occur at any age. The symptoms vary from having no vision at all, to an extensive list of visual difficulties that can impact significantly on education and social life.

ChildVision (@childvisionvi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

CVI is caused by a variety of different conditions such as a lack of oxygen at birth, head injuries, genetic conditions, prematurity, hydrocephalus and viruses such as meningitis.

ChildVision (@childvisionvi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

CVI can be misdiagnosed as ASD, ADHD, and dyslexia, to name just a few, as children with these conditions and children with cvi demonstrate some similar behaviours.

This Christmas all our children with a visual impairment can receive a letter from Santa in their preferred format (braille and large print). Please send your letters to: Santa’s Elves, c/o Reading Services, ChildVision, Grace Park Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9, by 2nd Dec.

Parents may notice their child with CVI may react slowly to visual cues, prefers to look at things that are moving, prefers to look at things in a certain part of their vision, such as peripheral vision.

ChildVision (@childvisionvi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Children with CVI may have trouble seeing certain parts of what is in front of them, such as busy moving scenes, recognising faces, things in cluttered spaces, understanding what it is they are looking at. They may stop using their vision or look away in order to listen to you.
