Today we remember APD Officer Thomas Birtrong, who was killed in the line of duty on August 23, 1974 when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle at E. 15th and Trinity while responding to assist another officer. His service and sacrifice will always be remembered. God Speed.

Today, we honor two APD officers we lost one day apart from each other, Sr. Police Officer Randy Boyd on Aug. 25, and Sgt. Steve Urias on Aug. 26, 2021, as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. God Speed.

It's #nationaldogday and we’d like to recognize our APD K-9 friends! These dedicated pups serve alongside their handlers for 8-9 years, using their skills to keep our community safe. When it's time to retire, they are lovingly adopted and live out their lives with their handlers.

We’d also like to recognize the sweet pups that are members of the @APDPetTeam! The team consists of 18 pups & 11 volunteers who visit APD facilities and other departments providing comfort, laughs, zoomies, and kisses to all they visit. Happy #NationalDogDay to all of our them!

My heart is saddened for our Dallas Police Dept family. They are mourning the loss of an officer, they are also helping their injured officers heal and get back home to their families. Your APD family is here for you, and our thoughts are with all this tragedy has affected.

I’m grateful to announce the APD Animal Cruelty Unit as our Employees of the Week! I am an animal lover myself, and can’t imagine the pain this family went through losing their beloved pet. Thank you for working hard to bring them some justice and comfort in their time of need.

Today we honor and remember Sr. Police Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq, who lost his life in the line of duty while providing an escort for a funeral. He passed away four days later on Sept. 4, 2016. His service and sacrifice to the Austin community will never be forgotten. God Speed.
