I published a report today about boys' hockey causing too many concussions with long term effects. Let's allow bodychecking at age 18 instead of 13 where it is now.

What do you think about raising the age of allowable bodychecking in kid's hockey to 18 from its current age of 13? See my report in Can J Neurol Sci this month.

Tua's first hit was when he was thrown to the turf landing on his buttocks with his neck extended and then the back of his head hit the turf forcefully. He got right up but clearly stumbled and concussion would have been highly likely, in my opinion.

Just saw Tua's second hit. He was thrown to the turf and back of head hit the turf again, but more forcefully this time. Looked unconscious immediately with "posturing" of his upper limbs and fingers in extension. Looks like another brain injury, but more serious than first.

Dr. Allan Sills is a neurosurgeon like me. He heads the NFL Head and Spine Committee, and has tried to get it right for players. With Tua's concussions, the NFL did not get it right. I am confident that Dr. Sills will try hard to get it right to give players better protection.

Do we still teach kids to walk on the side of the road facing the oncoming traffic so that they can spot careless drivers early enough to move away?

Cheers for the NINDS in the USA for revising their statement on CTE to indicate that CTE is related to brain injury such as concussion. We have stated this at our Canadian Concussion Centre-Toronto Western Hospital for many years based on brain donations from concussed athletes.

Sorry to know that Mike Bossy passed away from cancer. He helped us several years ago in our campaign to prevent broken necks in hockey from being pushed into the boards FROM BEHIND!! That was a battle we won!
