📬 Focus on teaching what matters! My newest mailbag episode with Jon Regino is packed with listener questions. Here we chat about why it’s so important to cut the fluff and focus on core math content. Link to full episode below.

A lot of people wonder about spiral math programs. They way my listener described it: "fractions, one week, geometry the next...topics moved before mastery was achieved." Jonathan Regino and I talked about this in my latest episode. Link to full episode below.

This is exactly why “teacher leaders” need to be in schools, not board offices. We need more people modeling and showing teachers how to implement. Many teachers know what to do, but not what it looks like or what to change. #ImplementationMatters

Fabulous episode about instructional illusions with Paul A. Kirschner, Carl Hendrick, and Jim Heal from their new book! Great fall listening here in the Cariboo. Well worth a listen!

100%! As a reading tutor, UFLI has been the easiest program for me to implement. All the bits and pieces are there on the website and in my manual. Plus, I love the new assessment because it accurately shows me where to start each student in lessons.

This was a great episode to listen to on a beautiful fall day. I sure wish I’d known about effective math education BEFORE I retired. Now I know why it was so difficult to implement the programs recommended by my district. I kept going back to Jump Math.

It’s exactly the same as when someone says, they “need to focus on SEL before they can teach any ‘academics’.” What people don’t realize is that their SEL improves as we teach children they can do things.

Hard-hitting article by the amazing Barbara Oakley. "Our brains need practice & memorization to move facts & skills into long-term memory, freeing up mental space for genuine problem-solving...a student cannot reason deeply about mathematics w/o mult'n facts and algebraic methods

We teachers have a lot of tasks on our plate but scrounging for lesson materials shouldn't be one of them. We need access to evidence-based materials with a clear scope and sequence so we can ensure we are supporting all students towards mastery.

"Rather than being the precursor to reading, “phonemic awareness” results from progress in learning to read alphabetic writing." Excellent clarification about phonemic awareness.

This message needs repeating! “What comforts adults can harm kids. Practices must align with child development AND evidence, not habit.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
